IC Spain signs agreement with ACELL Federation

The tennis project developed by the Federación Catalana de Deportes para Personas con Discapacidad Intelectual (ACELL), led by Sergi Bruguera, has been chosen for IC Spain’s solidarity programme. The President of IC Spain, Mr. José María Tintoré, and the President of the ACELL federation, Francesco Martínez de Foix, have signed an agreement of cooperation that will offer financial support to adapted forms of the sport throughout 2013. The financial contribution from the IC Council, the body that governs the International Clubs worldwide, will allow the activities of ACELL to reach greater numbers of players in different clubs and federations of the Catalan Tennis Federation.

ACELL’s tennis programme began in 1995 when five players were able to train once a week. Some years later, two-time Roland Garros champion Sergi Bruguera decided to get involved in the project and took charge of the tennis school with the result of an exponential growth in the number of participants.

The efforts and initiatives carried out by Bruguera – an idol for these players – has enabled ACELL to extend the project to other cities throughout Catalonia. At present, 74 players with learning disabilities are taking part in the project at various clubs.

Each year, during the ATP event at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, Bruguera organizes a master class which for these players has become a highlight of the non-competitive activities of the Barcelona Open BancSabadell. The former player has for many years been an advocate of tennis as a tool for improved social inclusion and improved quality of life.
