IC Spain claims IV IC Viva Mallorca Tennis Golf Challenge title

The IC of Spain has won the IV IC Viva Mallorca Tennis Golf Challenge that took place in Cala Mesquida from October 20-23.  The IC of Spain finished the event in first position after recording a draw with IC Great Britain and a win over IC Denmark.

This special IC competition combining tennis and golf owes its existence to the President of the IC Spain, Mr. Juan Mª Tintoré, who instigated and staged the first edition in Barcelona in 1989.  Under a format developed by Mr. David Waite, each tie awards three points for tennis, two for golf and two that combine both tennis and golf. For this fourth edition, the IC of Spain has collaborated with Viva and Vanity Hotels to stage the unique event on the northern east coast of the Mediterranean Island, home of some of the best sports facilities in Europe.

The first day of the competition saw IC Great Britain score a resounding 5-2 win over IC Denmark, with the Danes claiming both golf points. Day 2’s key match saw IC Great Britain and the host nation finish level at 3 points apiece after Simon Curtis (GBR) and Dirk Hinkel (ESP) tied their golf match. The tennis matches featured an outstanding singles contest between the two #1 players, Seb Jackson (GBR) and Santiago Tintoré (ESP). The Spanish player claimed the point for his team with a high quality 6-3 6-2 victory that would have made a worthy world seniors championship final. Jackson later teamed up with Dan Lobb in the doubles to claim Britain’s only tennis point.

The final day of the competition saw IC Spain complete a clear victory over IC Denmark, racing to a 7/0 scoreline despite some matches remaining incomplete due to unusual rainy weather.

The event also had a social component, with an official dinner which was attended by representatives from Viva Hotel, who were also joined by the President of the Balearic Tennis Federation, Mr. Antoni Ferragut.

Uniquely staged at several venues - the golf at Son Servera, Golf Capdepera and Golf Pula and the tennis in Son Besso – the event was held without hitches, with the participants taking an active role in the organization. All of the players enjoyed the camaraderie and fairplay of the event, and the teams expressed their interest in taking part in future editions of the competition.

The competition was supported by Rosbacher, whose sponsorship provided the water and tennis balls.
