IC Spain team finishes second at IC Compass Junior Challenge

The IC Spain team captained by Miguel Margets has finished in second place at the IC Compass Junior Challenge in Italy.

Teams from eight European countries took part in the event, which was held at TC Albinea from 9-14 July.

The tournament began with a round robin stage during which the draw divided into two groups of four teams. Spain began the event well, scoring wins over Russia, Luxembourg and Great Britain to advance to the semifinals as group winners.

In the semifinals, Spain beat the team from Sweden 5-1, while Italy brushed aside Great Britain 6-0.

The final turned out to be the competitive highlight of the week, with the second-seeded host nation eventually triumphing 4-3 overall. Newly-crowned Spanish Junior Champion Pedro Martinez and team-mate Jorge Lopez each won their singles matches (over Corrado Summaria and Giovanni Fonio) in straight sets before teaming up for a convincing doubles victory to give the Spaniards hope of a win.

However, the Italian girls proved to be equally strong, with Bianca Turati and Beatrice Torelli each scoring singles wins (over Ana Roman and Maria Gutierrez respectively) before taking to the court together to add the doubles rubber.

With the score tied at three matches apiece, a deciding mixed doubles tie was played and saw Torelli and Summaria edge to a 10-7 win over Roman and Martinez.

The competition had earlier seen a successful wheelchair tennis clinic which allowed the players from the main competition to take to the court alongside wheelchair tennis players for a mixed doubles match.
